Unlocking the Secrets: Modern Beauty and Boudoir Photoshoots Demystified
Let's start by defining what I am referring to as Beauty Photography: A non-commercial, photo session designed to showcase the inner and outer beauty of a woman.
Glamour, when I refer to Glamour please do not think the 1980's overdone makeup and big hair. Those of us old enough to remember those images still cringe. Today's glamour images are classic and simple with modern professional hair and makeup. Ladies often wear beautiful outfits and jewelry. Image backgrounds can vary from simply plain indoor studio setups all the way to glorious sunset mountain tops. No matter the location the focus is on her looking and feeling glamourous and beautiful.
Modern Beauty is a little different. I consider this to be more of a spinoff of Commercial Beauty & Fashion. A true fashion beauty image is a gorgeous closeup of the face, simple, no distractions, just pretty. I like to think of this as the "model for the day" type of shoot. Just like Glamour, these sessions are planned in advance, there is a specific "style" to them. They can have any type of background or location setting however, it is still best to keep it very simple. The emphasis is still the woman's inherent inner and outer beauty.
Now let's talk Boudoir. Simply put these are generally sexier images than beauty.
The goal of providing a woman with images that showcase her beauty is still the same but with sexier elements to the images. The focus is more on the woman's body. The posing and wardrobe tend to be minimal to show more of her curves. These shoots are still shot for the woman but as they may show a bit more skin she often does not want them publically displayed. The images are often purchased as a gift and printed in an album to privately share as well as give as a gift to a significant other.
If you are considering a Beauty or Boudoir Session do it! You will love it, you will have images that you can look back on for the rest of your life.
To take some of the mystery out of or dare I say fear of it, make sure to have an honest conversation with your photographer in advance about your session. It is important you feel comfortable so the more questions you ask the more you will know what to expect. Just remember, there is no right or wrong, no age or size limits, and no outfit or makeup requirements needed when it comes to looking and feeling beautiful.
